History of Seattle
The city grew from a settlement founded in 1851 by the Denny Party at Alki Point and takes its name from Chief Si'ahl of the Duwamish and Suquamish peoples. After the Great Seattle Fire of 1889 the downtown was rebuilt in brick and stone, and the Klondike Gold Rush of 1897 turned Seattle into a major supply port. The 1962 World's Fair left behind the Space Needle and Seattle Center.
